Service-area business vs storefront: hide your address or show it?

Google splits local businesses into three set-ups: storefront (customers come to you), service-area (you go to customers and don't serve them at your address) and hybrid (both). Getting this wrong, especially showing a home address you don't serve customers at, is one of the most common profile problems.

Step by step

  1. Ask one question: do customers come to this address during your hours? No → service-area business. Yes, and you also travel or deliver → hybrid. Yes, only → storefront.
  2. Service-area business: remove the address from the profile and add service areas. Google allows up to 20 service areas (cities, postal codes or other areas), not a radius, and says the overall area shouldn't be more than about 2 hours' drive from your base. One profile covers the whole area.
  3. Storefront or hybrid: show the full address and keep permanent signage with your business name there. Google says a business without permanent on-site signage isn't eligible as a storefront and should be listed as a service-area business.
  4. To change it: Business Profile → Edit profile → Location → edit the address and/or service area → Save. Google says approved service-area edits can take up to 48 hours to show.
  5. Check your business type guide for the usual set-up: e.g. plumber (usually service-area), dentist (storefront). All business-type guides.

Common questions

Will hiding my address make me disappear from Maps?

No. Service-area businesses still appear; Google shows the area you serve instead of a pin at your home. Visibility for any search is never guaranteed.

Can I add more than 20 service areas?

Google's help page says you can have up to 20.
